Meet Sophie Franchi
Studio maven & storyteller
Sophie has always been a wordsmith, but art moves her. Good design makes her heart sing. Aside from writing stories, one of her favorite childhood pastimes was rearranging and decorating her bedroom. She also loved school assignments that required she map out the floorplan of her family’s house. As a result, every time adult Sophie prepared to move into a new house or apartment, she would spend weeks taking measurements and designing the floorplan for her new space, painting the walls and scouting estate sales and consignment shops for just the right treasures to make her new place a home.
Sophie found that she was most confident in her writing, so her love of art and design took second chair as she pursued a Bachelor’s Degree in English and a minor in Creative Writing from The University of Akron.
While in college, Sophie interned as a writer and Community and Culture section editor for Akron’s free alt-monthly arts and culture magazine, The Devil Strip. Upon graduating in 2016, she was promoted to Managing Editor. For the next two years, Sophie leant her storytelling heart and soul to her hometown as she curated and edited the magazine’s content and guided other writers on their mission to foster civic pride. She enjoyed helping the citizens and entrepreneurs of Akron connect to one another and to their city.
Sophie still has much love for Akron, but wanted to find new ways to show it. She also wanted to get back to flexing her creative muscle. Without really knowing what was next, Sophie resigned from her position at the magazine to pursue more freelance writing. That’s how she came to Hazel Tree.
Sophie first began working with the team as a freelance storyteller. While interviewing Karen for a story, the two of them began talking about the need for another set of creative hands in the studio, and suddenly it seemed that Sophie might be just the person for the job. In June of 2018, Sophie joined the Hazel Tree team as Studio Maven and Storyteller. She collaborates with the team on design projects, tells the Hazel Tree story via our blog and social media outlets and helps with client needs in the studio. Sustainability and community are of utmost importance to Sophie, which aligns nicely with Hazel Tree’s mission.
